End of Year Giving Ideas

December 14, 2010

The first frost has hit, so that’s a reminder to me to bring out my sweaters and winter attire in preparation for the cold weather ahead.  I make a habit of setting aside some of my winter clothes that no longer fit or I haven’t worn for the last few years and give them to the local Goodwill, but I have to make a detour from my normal routine to get there.

This year my husband’s employer is making it much easier for me to be charitably inclined, since they provided a drop-off box in their front lobby from the Salvation Army to accept donations of new or used toys and clothing over the holidays.  This comes just in time, since as the end of the year approaches, it is my last chance to donate in order to take my charitable deduction for my 2010 tax return.

Do you encourage your employees to donate to charity?  Consider inviting a local non-profit organization to place a drop box at your office.  Instead of doing a gift exchange between co-workers, sponsor a needy family as their Secret Santa.  Supporting a charitable organization doesn’t have to take much time or effort, but can go a long way in helping those less fortunate this holiday season.
