Does Style Matter?
October 05, 2010I recently experienced my 15 minutes of fame by being featured in the October issue of SmartMoney Magazine. I was so excited to pick up the edition from the newsstand and rushed to turn to the article. The writer had sat in on a retirement education workshop I had facilitated several months ago, so I was on pins and needles to see how my knowledge and overall presentation skills would be dissected. But instead of reading about my skills, the article goes on to describe in detail the outfit I wore that day, down to the paisley print of my skirt.
I had heard that over 80% of what we communicate is non-verbal, but this really hit home how important first impressions are regarding not only what we say, but what we do, what we wear, and even how we move about a room is all subconsciously analyzed.
This week I’m talking to employees on the factory floor to help the second and third shifters become better prepared for retirement. I get to leave my skirt and heels back home and replace them with my comfortable shoes, khaki pants, and hardhat. I am eager to get this new group excited about their generous benefits and to show them that a financially secure retirement can be a reality. I also want them to feel comfortable enough with me so they break out of their shells, ask questions, and share stories.
Hopefully this time I will be judged on my knowledge and presentation skills and not the clothes I’m wearing!
