Why We Practice What We Preach

July 15, 2010

Picture a gorgeous sunny day sitting in the backyard relaxing on one of those (seemingly) rare days off. Feet up on the table, cold glass of (pick beverage of your choice) and an interesting magazine at the ready, when out of nowhere my wonderful wife states that it might be a good time to review our retirement. I pause a moment and think to myself, “Sure why not, it’s been about a year, we’re due,” and so I smile and say “Great idea! Let’s do it.” She smiles and breathes a contented sigh as she quietly states, “Good, because I REALLY want to retire in 5 years.” Instantly I wondered if my hearing was going so I asked my (still) wonderful wife if I had heard her correctly to which she responded in the affirmative.

Now I’m still pretty young, or at least I think of myself that way and my wife is younger than I am, so hearing that she wishes to retire was to say the least, a bit of a shocker to me, but after taking a couple gulps of my (pick beverage of your choice) I let her know that we certainly can see if her wish of retiring in 5 years is doable. Oh, and I did this with a loving smile on my face.

She seemed happy. Good, you know what they say “happy wife, happy life.” Now I get to show her how wishes meet reality. And now that I got you hooked, you can hear what happened in my next post.
