Wellness Programs Actually Do Protect Both Health AND Wealth

Last Sunday started out as a typical fall weekend morning.  My husband, Dave, had gotten up early in the morning, donned his camouflage pants and mud boots, and was getting ready to go out beyond our backyard to scope out a good hunting spot for the upcoming deer season.  We live in a very rural area of southern Pennsylvania, with lots of woods, wildlife, and even a few Amish neighborhood farms.  Many of us in the community don’t even lock our doors, not thinking crime would find us here.  As Dave was getting ready to head outside, I happened to look out the front window and saw two tall, skinny teenage guys walking down our long driveway.  I said to Dave, “Oh uh, I think someone else has found your secret hunting spot!” so he went out the back door to see who they were.

A quick back story about Dave – he’s 50 years old, but bound and determined to keep up with the younger guys at his office.  This year, his company instituted a wellness program that included access to a personal fitness trainer at the local gym.  When Dave went to his initial appointment and the trainer said he was bordering on obese, he got serious and started a fitness program that he has faithfully been going to 3 times a week for the past several months.  This training was about to pay off.

As Dave went around the side of the house, he observed the guys looking into the windows of our cars, and one had a hammer in his hand.  He shouted at them, and they took off running.  Dave was close behind, as the guys ran into the woods.  Through the thorny brush, down the hill, and then into the stream, Dave kept up with them, screaming “you can run as long as you want and I will just keep following you all day.”  By this time, the teens were soaking wet, having fallen into the water as they hit the stream.  One threw off his heavy sweatshirt, which Dave grabbed as evidence.  By the time they made it to the road, a buddy was waiting in his Jeep to pick them up for a quick escape.  Too bad, Dave got the license plate!

By this time, I’m at home worrying as the clock has ticked by almost an hour so I had called the police.  The officer said he has just taken a complaint from one of my other neighbors that their car had been broken into and spare change, a cell phone, and GPS unit had been stolen.  Well, it was pretty easy to figure out who the culprits were for that crime.  The officer drove around and found Dave walking on the road about 3 miles from home.  It is probably a rare feeling to be relieved to see your loved one in the back of a police vehicle.  Once home, the first thing Dave said was, “Thanks  to my fitness program at work, I could have chased those punks all day long!”

So with our belongings safe under the watchful eye of vigilante Dave, our wealth is secure.  His fitness and diet program took a step back that day, however.  Once our neighbor heard from the police that the thieves had been apprehended and that her cell phone was found in the Jeep, she baked Dave a yummy batch of chocolate chip cookies.
