Kimye Coupling Do’s and Don’ts

As much as I try, it is hard to avoid hearing or reading about the extravagant nuptials of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.  the Kimye couple reportedly spent a cool $12 million on their Italian wedding.  While this trend-setting couple had the cash to spend on a gorgeous Florence location and $500,000 JUST on her dress, most of us have a smaller budget.  With summer as the most popular season for weddings,  let’s talk about weddings and financing them.

The average wedding cost roughly $30,000 in 2013, according to the wedding website TheKnot.com.  This amount doesn’t even include the honeymoon expenses! Throw in a trip to Italy like Kimye and your costs will skyrocket.

First, set a budget. As soon as the engagement is official, it’s time to set a realistic budget. Will you and your fiancee pay for most of it or are your parents picking up the tab?  Have a frank, sit down discussion as early as possible to understand who is expected to pay for what.  Once you know what you’ll need to pay, use this interactive budgeting tool and this calculator to show you how much to save up for the big day.

Second, plan early for the best deals.  Think creatively.  Have an afternoon wedding with light hors d’oeuvres instead of a sit down meal.  Get married on a Friday or Sunday instead of a Saturday; most reception venues will be less expensive.  Limit the liquor offerings at the bar to beer and wine or go with a cash bar.

Third, consider a destination wedding.  Who doesn’t dream of a beautiful sunset wedding on a tropical beach?   Most resorts have staff that will handle all the details once you arrive.  The cost is normally less because most people will probably not attend.  You can make up for that after the honeymoon with a large and inexpensive cookout where everyone is invited to celebrate with the newlyweds.

Lastly, remember that this is only one day in a hopefully, long and happy marriage. You don’t need to spend $12 million to have the best day of your life. But starting off without a lot of wedding debt could go a long way in making your marriage a happier one.
